Why arcade racers feel great again on phones

September 3, 2026 · Katarina Novak

For years, mobile racing meant tilting your whole phone and praying. It was awful, and it gave the genre a bad name it didn't fully deserve.

The shift came when developers stopped treating touch as a compromise and started designing around it. Neon Apex Rush lets you tap to accelerate and brake with responsive on-screen buttons, and the drift model is built for exactly that input. It feels intentional.

Arcade physics help too. Realistic sims want fine analog control that touchscreens can't give, but arcade handling with a simple grip-and-drift model plays beautifully with taps. You're managing rhythm, not millimeters.

If you gave up on mobile racing a while ago, the good arcade titles are worth another look. Just steer clear of anything that forces tilt controls with no alternative.
